“But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground
and hid his master’s money.” ~ Matthew 25:18
In the earlier part of this parable, Jesus contrasts this person’s actions with others who wisely used the talents he gave them to benefit the owner rather than, through fear, fail to use their talents. It highlights the importance of using our unique abilities (talents) to serve God (the owner).
To me, the funds I have represent the work and energy I have put forth in investing my talents to earn a living. These were a gift from God to be shared. John Wesley, in his sermon on the use of money, said “Gain all you can. Save all you can. Give all you can.” He is suggesting that after gaining (or earning) and saving all we can, we need to share all we can to further God’s kingdom.
Prayer
Gracious God, we thank you for the talents we have been given and the many opportunities to share them with your church and others. We ask your guidance as we step out in faith to share all we can.
